It was good to see a turnout of around 60 competitors, especially considering the rather last minute registration and advertising of the event. What was particularly encouraging was that some new NUOC members and university Duke of Edinbugh's Award club members also competed. This hopefully marks a change in NUOC's fortunes, as in recent years we have had very few active members.
As this is the first event I've organised, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. An extra hour of setting-up time would have been useful, as we had to rush to get the Start and Finish up and running. Many thanks to all the NOC and NUOC members who helped out on the day. We were especially grateful to NOC because NUOC didn't have enough helpers, and the planner was called away to run with the GB O-Squad. However, everyone who helped, from whichever club, did a great job.
I was pleased that no controls were moved or stolen - always a risk at a park event - and that we received no complaints. One slight problem was that the route to the parking had to be rearranged due to my failure to notice the one way system, so sorry to anyone who got lost on the way to the parking! Also, the gate operator at the campus entrance was threatening at one stage not to let orienteers in, but this was resolved when she left the gate. Liz Day's planning was praised, which is great news after she had to rush not only to plan, but to partly re-survey the map beforehand.
Special thanks must go to Liz for planning, controller Mark Thomson, David Olivant for making the maps at such short notice, to Ray Barnes for giving me lots of assistance with the organisation, to Angela and Mick Lucking for supplying the equipment and results, and to Michael Napier for the finish clock.
